Wheel of Fortune Win Leaves Viewers Replaying One Word

A big night on Wheel of Fortune became even more memorable when a player’s Bonus Round answer turned into a post-show talk. Steve Knapp, a driver’s education teacher from Hampshire, Illinois, left the January 20 show with a major prize total, a Punta Cana trip, and a new Nissan — but viewers were still focused on one word.
Knapp’s win was taken on the show, and host Ryan Seacrest moved the party forward without waiting. After the show aired, however, some fans replayed the moment and questioned whether the answer they heard matched the puzzle on the board.
How Steve Knapp Reached the Bonus Round
The game did not start with Knapp in control. Sharisse Cohee of San Diego opened strong after Stacy Robinson of Columbus, Ohio, missed an early toss-up. Cohee then solved “Take It With a Grain of Salt,” pushing her total past $7,000.
Knapp found his first real opening during the Mystery Round, after all three players hit Bankrupt. That reset gave him room to get back up, and he solved the “Before & After” puzzle “Word of Wisdom Tooth” for $2,750.
The next major shift came in the Prize Puzzle round. Cohee reached the Express Train but lost her turn after choosing a wrong consonant. Robinson also ran into trouble, and Knapp took advantage by solving “Luxurious Getaway.” That gave him a trip to Punta Cana and lifted his winnings above $15,000.
The Triple Toss-Up round kept the match close. Knapp missed the first board, allowing Cohee to claim it, while Robinson solved the next two puzzles to strengthen her own spot.
Knapp then gave the answer that secured his place in the finale: “Make It To the Super Bowl.” The solve added $20,400 to his total and sent him to the Bonus Round with speed.
The Bonus Round Moment Everyone Replayed
For the final puzzle, Knapp chose the category “What Are You Doing?” His wife and a childhood friend stood nearby as help while the board filled in.
After the standard letters R, S, T, L, N, and E appeared, Knapp selected G, C, M, and A. The puzzle showed: “G_ _ NG AN A_T_GRA _.”
With time still left, Knapp gave the answer: “Giving an autograph.” Seacrest accepted it right away, and Knapp dropped into an excited celebration on the studio floor.
“Was that your foxtrot?” Seacrest asked.
“Something like that,” Knapp replied.
The party grew when Seacrest opened the prize envelope and showed that Knapp had won a brand-new Nissan. With the car included, his total winnings reached $65,800.
For a driver’s education teacher, winning a new vehicle added a funny twist to the result. It also made the prize package more than just a game-show number. A new car, a tropical trip, and cash winnings can mean real-world value, especially when travel and vehicle costs stay major bills for many homes.
Why Viewers Questioned the Call
After the show, the talk shifted from the prize total to the sound of the final answer. Some viewers said Knapp sounded as if he said “getting” instead of “giving,” and argued that the Bonus Round should need the exact phrase.
Others defended the choice. They noted that TV audio can blur small sounds, especially when a player is speaking fast under pressure. Some also said Knapp’s mouth movement and timing appeared to match “giving an autograph,” the phrase that was taken on air.
The result stood, and Knapp left with his winnings, the Punta Cana trip, and the Nissan. Whether viewers heard the answer clearly or not, the moment became the kind of game-show finish people replay long after the final spin.
For now, it stays a reminder that on Wheel of Fortune, one letter — or one sound — can keep people talking well after the puzzle is solved.
