Forced medications, lost childhood — but today everyone knows her name

At one time, she was among the most recognizable faces in the world.

Her journey from a celebrity embroiled in scandals to a passionate advocate for the most vulnerable individuals is truly extraordinary.

However, it all started with a series of deeply unsettling experiences during her childhood — tales that many people are still unaware of.

Regardless of being a celebrity with a fortune, everyone faces — or has faced — significant life-altering and traumatic experiences. This celebrity’s narrative serves as a reminder to refrain from judgment and to show kindness and compassion to all.

For many years, she was known merely for her fame. She was one of the most recognizable faces globally, associated with wealth, glamour, and indulgence.

To the outside world, her life seemed effortless. Extravagant parties. Reality TV stardom. A carefree, bubblegum-pink image that made her a staple in pop culture. Yet, beneath that facade lay a childhood filled with fear, silence, and trauma that she concealed for many years.

Born in 1981, she frequently relocated during her childhood, residing in Beverly Hills, the Hamptons, and even a suite at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in Manhattan.

Family members recall her as someone who was “very much a tomboy” with aspirations of becoming a veterinarian. Her mother reminisced about how she would save her allowance to purchase monkeys, snakes, and goats, even once letting “the snake out the cage […] at the Waldorf.”

Despite her adventurous spirit, she was raised in a very “sheltered, conservative” household. Her parents were quite strict — she was prohibited from dating, wearing makeup, going to school dances, or donning certain types of clothing. Additionally, her mother signed her up for etiquette classes, aiming to present her as a debutante. Initially, she was hesitant, feeling it was neither “real” nor “natural.”

In her teenage years, she led a rebellious lifestyle, frequently skipping school and sneaking out to go to parties. At just 14, the future star was groomed by her teacher, and her parents returned home to find her in a car in the driveway, kissing an adult man.

Subsequently, she was sent to a boarding school for “troubled” youth in Utah, an experience she would later describe as transformative and profoundly disturbing. In a documentary released years later, she referred to the institution as “the worst of the worst.”

“You’re sitting on a chair staring at a wall all day long, getting yelled at or hit,” she disclosed. She expressed that many staff members seemed “used to hurting children and seeing them naked.”

According to her testimony, students were compelled to take unknown pills that left them feeling drained and numb. She also claimed that staff routinely forced students to undress. “It felt like I was going crazy,” she admitted.

Frightened, she confided in no one, not even her parents.

Recurring nightmares

A staff member cautioned her that if she spoke out, they would inform her parents that she was lying and ensure they believed it. Fearful of retaliation, she chose to remain silent.

The trauma lingered into her adult years. She later disclosed that she continues to experience recurring nightmares, managing only a few hours of sleep each night.

“For the last 20 years, I’ve been plagued by a recurring nightmare where I’m abducted in the dead of night by two strangers, subjected to a strip search, and confined in a facility.”

The star mentioned that she was battling ADHD. However, she grew up in a time when diagnoses were not prevalent.

The positive aspects of attention deficit disorder — “We’re incredibly creative, we’re always thinking, our minds race like a sports car” — went unnoticed. “My childhood would have been vastly different if I’d received a diagnosis: I certainly wouldn’t have been sent away,” she shared with The Guardian in 2023.

Finally had enough

For an extended period, this icon concealed her pain by embracing a meticulously crafted persona, the ditzy, carefree party girl that the world anticipated.

“I essentially created this character of a Barbie doll [with a] flawless life,” she explained to Q guest host Talia Schlanger during an interview.

“I just kept portraying that character because I realized that’s what people desired … and then it sort of became an integral part of me. I now view it as the more playful, enjoyable aspect of myself. But I believe it all really traces back to everything I endured as a teenager.

Ultimately, she made the choice to speak up.

She described sharing her story publicly as a transformative experience. “Sharing my story publicly was the most healing experience of my life.” However, it wasn’t solely about her own healing. She became aware that there were still children suffering from the same abuse she had faced.

“I can’t sleep at night knowing that there are children enduring the same abuse that I and many others experienced, and neither should you,” she expressed to lawmakers while pushing for reform.

“I’m being the hero that I needed..”

Today, she stands as one of the leading voices highlighting the abuses within the troubled teen industry, leveraging her platform to advocate for accountability, regulation, and the protection of vulnerable children.

“I’m being the hero that I needed when I was a little girl,” she remarked.

“I missed out on so many experiences that every teenage girl goes through: attending school, going to prom, and heading off to college,” she shared.

Only now, after a long journey from silence to activism, is the world recognizing her not just as a celebrity, but as a survivor and advocate.

Her name? Paris Hilton.

Today, this once scandal-ridden party princess has embarked on a completely different journey. In her professional life, the 44-year-old Hilton appears to have a clear vision, having established a billion-dollar empire that includes various product lines and fragrances.

This doesn’t even take into account her successful tech investments, profitable DJ performances, and her career in reality television. Not too shabby for someone who was once labeled as “famous for being famous.” She shared her thoughts on her journey with Vanity Fair: “I feel proud because I’ve always loved being an innovator — doing things first and setting trends.”

A significant portion of her wealth is derived from endorsements and her retail business, which has amassed over $4 billion in sales across various product lines and stores.

Struggled to conceive due to trauma

However, her joy isn’t solely based on financial success.

Hilton also discovered true love and finally realized her dream wedding with Carter Reum in November 2021. After getting engaged on February 13, 2021, they tied the knot in Los Angeles on November 11. The couple now has a son and a daughter, both welcomed through surrogacy in January and November 2023, respectively.

Hilton has mentioned that she couldn’t conceive due to trauma, a legacy of abuse that she elaborates on in her book. She expressed that she would have loved to experience pregnancy and was looking forward to “amazing maternity looks, Beyoncé-belly-among-the-roses photo shoot.” However, after two years of IVF, it still didn’t occur. She reflects, “my mind and body had never fully healed – and probably never will fully heal – from the trauma I went through as a teenager.”

The birth of her son, Phoenix, also provided her with new perspectives on her parents.

“Even though he’s a baby, I’m already worrying about that one day when he’s a teenager and he’s gonna sneak out at night. So it definitely makes me understand even more why my parents were so protective and so strict. This is your little baby, you don’t want anything to happen to them. So I could understand why my family wanted me to stay home. They were just worried.

Were you aware of Paris Hilton’s challenging past and her difficult experiences in boarding school? I must admit, I had no clue and haven’t watched the documentary where she shares her story — but it seems like something worth seeing.
