Missing Mother and 8-Month-Old Baby Found Dead in Submerged Car Weeks After Doctor’s Visit

A heartbreaking discovery was made in Northern California on Sunday, August 17, 2025, when a missing mother and her infant daughter were found dead in a submerged SUV. The victims were identified as Whisper Owens and her eight-month-old daughter, Sandra McCarthy, who had been missing for more than a month. Their 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer was located beneath a bridge in a canal near Highway 120 and Victory Avenue outside Oakdale.

Search teams used sonar equipment to detect the vehicle, which was found lodged underwater. Inside, both mother and child were discovered, with investigators noting that Whisper appeared to have tried to shield her daughter during the tragic ordeal. The circumstances that led to the SUV’s submersion remain under investigation, though foul play has not been indicated.

Whisper and Sandra were last seen on July 15 after traveling to Fresno for a medical appointment and family visits. She began her return trip to Sacramento that evening but never arrived. Her phone later pinged near the canal, leading searchers to the location. The discovery ended weeks of anguish for relatives, who had been retracing her route, distributing flyers, and appealing for help on social media.

Family members described Whisper as a devoted mother of four who would never have disappeared intentionally. Her brother, Richard Owens, expressed the family’s devastation but also gratitude that they finally had answers. “It’s a loss beyond words,” he said. “But at least now we can stop searching and start grieving.”
