The twin girls were diagnosed with a rare condition called thoraco-omphalopagus — they were joined at the chest and abdomen and shared several vital organs.
On November 18, 2020, Addison and Lilianna were born and immediately placed under the care of specialists at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, one of the few in the U.S. equipped to handle such complex cases.
The Altobellis relocated to be closer to the medical team, ensuring their daughters received the best possible care.
The twins spent nearly a year in intensive care. Their bodies were connected at the chest and abdomen, sharing a liver, diaphragm, chest wall, and abdominal wall.
Doctors prepared carefully for the high-risk separation surgery — a single mistake could cost both girls their lives.
Exactly one year after their birth, surgeons performed a groundbreaking operation. It took many hours but was a success. Eddie and Lili were finally given the chance to live separate, independent lives.
Following the surgery, both girls required breathing support through tracheostomy tubes. However, doctors were optimistic that the need for them would eventually fade.
Despite everything they’d endured, the twins quickly adjusted to life apart. Not long after the operation, they began to crawl and, months later, took their first steps.
Now, nearly four years later, Addison and Lilianna are energetic, joyful, and full of personality.
