Four Years After Dobbs, 19 States Protect Babies From Abortions
Four years after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in its Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision, 19 states now have laws protecting babies from abortion.
The June 24, 2022, ruling restored to the American people and their elected representatives the authority to enact laws protecting unborn children. Today marks the fourth anniversary of that landmark decision.
“Four years ago, the Supreme Court corrected a grave injustice by overturning Roe v. Wade,” said Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life. “For nearly fifty years, Roe prevented the American people from protecting unborn children through our elected representatives.”

Since the Dobbs decision, 19 states protect babies from abortions.
Thirteen states ban abortion from conception: Alabama, Arkansas, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas and West Virginia.
Four states protect babies at six weeks: Florida, Georgia, Iowa and South Carolina.
Two states protect babies at 12 weeks: Nebraska and North Carolina.
Utah and Wyoming are fighting in court to protect babies.
“Dobbs was not the end of our work—it was the beginning of a new chapter,” Tobias said. “Every child deserves protection, and every mother deserves support. National Right to Life and our state affiliates will continue advocating for policies that protect unborn children, assist women and families, and foster a culture that values human life.”
Despite the historic victory in Dobbs, abortion remains legal throughout much of the country, including in many states that allow abortion until birth.
But pro-life advocates will work to chip away from that list, starting with Missouri, where state voters can support a ballot Amendment this November to protect babies.
“For more than five decades, National Right to Life has worked to protect unborn children, help their mothers, and safeguard other vulnerable members of the human family,” Tobias said. “We remain committed to building a society where innocent human life is welcomed and protected.”
And pro-life advocates in radically pro-abortion states will never give up.
“Today, our team at Oregon Right to Life joins pro-life advocates across the country in celebrating the fourth anniversary of the overturning of Roe and Casey,” Oregon Right to Life executive director Lois Anderson said. “Dobbs was a victory that caught many pro-life advocates by surprise, even though we had been praying, working, and hoping for it for decades. Suddenly, Roe v. Wade was no more, and immediately states began passing laws protecting the unborn.”
“Of course, as we celebrate the anniversary of this monumental pro-life victory, we recognize that there is still so much work to be done,” Anderson said. “While many states immediately moved to do the right thing and protect the unborn after Roe was overturned, Oregon did the opposite and doubled down. Abortion is still legal on-demand in our state up to the moment of birth, late-term abortions are on the rise, and the prevalence of chemical abortion continues to put women at risk in addition to ending innocent unborn lives.”
“The truth is, the end of Roe was not the end of the pro-life movement, but a new beginning: an opportunity for further progress in the struggle for the right to life for every human being,” she said. “Here at Oregon Right to Life, we’re determined never to back down from working toward legal protections for the unborn, supporting a network of life-affirming resources for moms and families, and educating the public about the reality of abortion and the humanity of the unborn.”
