What happened to Ann Curry?

The seasoned journalist Ann Curry, who turned 67 on November 19, has had a remarkable career in journalism. Curry still leaves her mark in the field even though she might not be making headlines anymore.

Curry started his media career in 1978 as an intern at the Oregon NBC station KTVL. She rose through the ranks fast, becoming the first female news reporter on the channel. She then went on to KGW in Portland, where she served as a reporter and anchor. Curry then worked as a reporter for a Los Angeles-based CBS affiliate for six years, winning two Emmy Awards for her exceptional work during that time.

Curry began working for NBC News as a correspondent in Chicago in 1990. Later on, she worked as an anchor on the morning program “NBC News at Sunrise” and as Matt Lauer’s substitute on “Today.” She was elevated to the post of news anchor on “Today” in 1997, and she remained there until 2011. During her tenure at NBC, Curry also co-anchored Dateline NBC and filled in as the primary substitute on NBC Nightly News.

Curry left “Today” in June 2012 in a dramatic and tearful exit, despite her achievements and services to the network. She never explained why she had left. Curry did, however, stay with NBC News until January 2015, when she formally departed the organization.

Curry has continued to have an impact on the media industry since she left. She produced the PBS series “We’ll Meet Again” and established a multi-platform media company. Curry hosted TNT’s “Chasing the Cure” and delivered a TED Talk about reviving faith in journalism. In 2022, Washington State University’s Edward R. Murrow College of Communication presented her with the coveted Murrow Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of her commitment to journalism and covering human suffering in conflict areas and natural catastrophes.

Curry’s influence goes beyond her career pursuits. She recently participated in a PBS Arts Talk discussion with “Pachinko” author Min Jin Lee. Curry doesn’t post much on social media, but she does periodically share aspects from her life, such as a recent wintry shot and a message wishing everyone warmth and safety.

Even though Ann Curry’s career has taken unexpected turns, her love of narrative and journalism is still evident. She has persevered and made a lasting impression on the industry in spite of obstacles.
