When Maria H. put her 2-year-old son, Saint, to bed after he suffered a mosquito bite on his face, she gave little thought to it. By the next morning, the swelling around his eye had become so severe that he could barely open it.

The frightening transformation, captured in a series of photos years ago, recently found a second life on TikTok, where viewers watched Saint’s eye swell more dramatically with each image as a saxophone soundtrack grew louder in the background.

“The first photo I took was when I started noticing the bite getting bigger,” Maria tells PEOPLE. “It started off looking like a normal mosquito bite, just a small bump, and my son would scratch it on and off throughout the day.”

What seemed like a typical reaction didn’t stay that way for long. As the swelling continued to spread, Maria began documenting the changes and watching her son closely.

By the following morning, Saint could barely open his eye. The dramatic progression left Maria increasingly worried, especially as she tried to navigate the situation during a time when many families were still hesitant to seek in-person medical care because of COVID restrictions.

“I definitely started to panic as the swelling kept getting bigger,” she says. After reaching out to her son’s pediatrician and calling the hospital, she was told to watch for symptoms such as fever or persistent eye discharge and to give him Benadryl.

Neither symptom ever appeared, but that didn’t stop Maria from worrying. She says she spent much of the night checking on her son as the swelling continued to worsen.

“I stayed up checking on him throughout the night because I was worried about how quickly the swelling was progressing,” she recalls.

The next morning brought little relief. When Saint’s pediatrician saw the extent of the swelling, the doctor initially worried the problem could be something more serious than an insect bite.

Because Saint could barely open his eye, it was difficult to examine the area fully. Fortunately, Maria had taken an earlier photo showing the bite before the swelling intensified, giving the doctor an important piece of context.

“Thankfully, I took a before photo,” she says. The image helped demonstrate that the reaction began with a mosquito bite rather than an infection that originated in the eye.

After examining Saint and confirming that his eye itself was not red and that he had no fever or significant discharge, the pediatrician determined he was experiencing a severe reaction to the bite. The family was advised to continue using Benadryl and hydrocortisone cream while monitoring his symptoms.

The treatment worked quickly. Within a day, the swelling began to subside, and throughout the ordeal, Maria says Saint never stopped acting like himself.

“Once we followed the treatment plan, the swelling started to go down the very next day,” she says. “Throughout the entire experience, my son was still acting like himself, which was a huge relief.”

Today, Saint is 7 years old and has experienced no lasting side effects from the reaction. The photos, however, recently took on a new life after Maria paired them with TikTok’s popular saxophone trend.

“I definitely didn’t expect it to blow up the way it did,” she says. After posting the video and going to sleep, she woke up to a flood of notifications and realized just how many people had connected with the story.

Looking back, Maria hopes other parents take away one simple lesson: trust your instincts and don’t be afraid to seek guidance when something feels off.

“My advice to parents is to always monitor the situation, seek medical advice and ask questions if you’re concerned,” she says. “If something doesn’t seem right, trust your instincts and have your child evaluated by a medical professional.”
