Taking to X (formerly Twitter) in the early hours of this morning, Elon Musk fired a somewhat emotional message in the direction of political pal Donald Trump, even @’ing the President directly.

Minutes later, news was splashed across global headlines confirming that the tech boss had sensationally resigned from his position within the Trump administration.

The 78-year-old Republican handed Musk the role of Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) co-lead upon his inauguration back in January – a position that would make the Tesla CEO responsible for cutting excessive federal spending.

In the weeks that followed, Musk, 53, was subjected to accusations of a ‘hostile takeover’ after brutally axing thousands of government and civil positions – all with the full support of the President.

Over time, however, reports began emerging that alleged the pair’s relationship wasn’t running as smoothly behind the scenes as it appeared to be in public, with inside sources claiming Musk was planning on departing from politics.

Though the father-of-13 initially denied this speculation, he confirmed this morning that he has stepped away from Trump’s supporting staff, leaving the President with one final, surprisingly forgiving message.

Taking to social media earlier today (29 May), Musk tweeted: “As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending,” he wrote.

“The @DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government.”

In the hours that followed, however, the billionaire alluded to the fact that his ‘break up’ from Trump was actually rather bitter, hinting in a retweet that the two had endured tensions for some time by preempting negative publicity.

Musk reshared a message written by an account named @cb_doge, which read: “In the coming days, legacy media will try to convince you that President Trump and Elon Musk are no longer friends and that’s why Musk left.”

The statement continued: “What they won’t tell you is that Elon was a Special Government Employee, limited to 130 days of service and that term ends tomorrow.”

Weeks prior to the announcement of his departure, Musk seemed to ‘shade’ Trump for his overspending, vowing during an interview with Bloomberg’s Mishal Husain: “I think, in terms of political spending, I’m going to do a lot less in the future.

“I think I’ve done enough, Musk added at the time.

Days later, Musk admitted to being ‘disappointed’ by Trump’s recent backing of a bill which is expected to increase the deficit by $3.8 trillion by 2034, claiming said legislation ‘undermines the work’ that his team ‘is doing’.
