Getting 7–9 hours of sleep is vital for health, helping the body recover and lowering risks of stroke, obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Experts also note that sleeping with a partner can reduce stress, improve sleep quality, and boost emotional well-being.

A study by psychologist Richard Wiseman found that 42% of couples sleep back-to-back, 34% touch while sleeping, and 31% sleep on the same side all night. Couples who sleep close—even without touching—tend to report higher satisfaction in their relationship.

Sleeping apart doesn’t mean emotional distance. It can reflect mutual trust and respect for personal space. While sleep positions can reveal emotional cues, they shouldn’t be seen as the sole indicator of relationship quality. Habits, comfort, and health also play a role.
