We Are Deeply Saddened to Share the Loss of a Television Icon Who Left Behind an Incredible Legacy

Honoring Mel Schilling: Tributes Pour In for the Beloved ‘MAFS’ Expert

The entertainment world is in mourning following the tragic passing of Mel Schilling, the renowned Married At First Sight relationship expert, at the age of 54. Since the news broke, a wave of heartfelt tributes has emerged from her closest friends, family, and the many lives she touched throughout her career.

A Final Conversation: Elizabeth Day’s Tribute

Leading the tributes is the acclaimed English novelist and broadcaster Elizabeth Day. To honor her late friend, Day re-released the “How To Fail” podcast episode featuring Schilling—the very recording that sparked their deep bond.

In a moving new introduction to the episode, Day expressed her disbelief at the loss. “I held onto hope that I would never have to record these words,” she shared. “Even as Mel faced cancer, it felt impossible that someone so vibrant could truly leave us.” Day described Schilling as a person whose energy could “power the national grid” and expressed profound gratitude for the chance to visit her shortly before she passed. She noted that Mel’s final message to the world remains clear: to believe in one’s own worthiness of love.

A Husband’s Final Goodbye

On Tuesday night, Schilling’s husband, Gareth, shared a poignant statement via her Instagram account. Confirming the loss of his “soulmate,” he reminded followers of the fragility of life. “Tomorrow is promised to no one,” he wrote, urging people to honor Mel by living fully and loving deeply. Gareth described his 15 years with Mel as the greatest privilege of his life.

The Health Journey

Schilling’s passing comes just weeks after she bravely shared that her “light was starting to fade” following the discovery that her cancer had spread to her brain. Her battle began in December 2023 with a colon cancer diagnosis. Though she was initially cleared after surgery, a scan in February 2024 revealed the cancer had metastasized to her lungs before its final progression.

“My Partner in Crime”: John Aiken Remembers

John Aiken, who worked alongside Schilling on MAFS for a decade, shared an emotional tribute to his “partner in crime.” He described himself as “heartbroken and devastated,” recounting their ten-year journey through the heights of the show’s success.

Aiken highlighted Mel’s warmth, honesty, and genuine dedication to the show’s participants. Beyond the cameras, he recalled their behind-the-scenes rituals—singing, dancing, and video-calling Mel’s daughter, Maddie. “She was a fighter, a leader, and an inspiration,” Aiken wrote. “It’s simply not fair that she is gone.”

Impact on the ‘MAFS’ Family

The broader MAFS community also expressed their grief. Tristan Black, a participant from the 2024 season, credited Mel with making him feel at ease during the show’s most nerve-wracking moments, calling her a “brand-new angel” in heaven.

Other stars, including Michael Brunelli and Martha Kalifatidis from season six, thanked Mel for her genuine care during their time on the experiment. Tributes also arrived from across the globe, with All Saints singer Natalie Appleton and various television presenters describing her as a “true angel” and a “trailblazer” of kindness.

A Dazzling Legacy

Elizabeth Day, who also co-hosted the How To Date podcast with Schilling, shared personal memories of Mel’s “inner radiance.” She recalled Mel’s “deliciously savage” sense of humor and her “why not?” attitude toward life—whether it was aiming high in her career or meeting the love of her life online at 39.

Day shared the heartbreaking irony that Mel learned her cancer had returned just one day before the launch party for their How To Date project on Valentine’s Day. Despite the news, Mel arrived in gold sequins, dancing and celebrating. “She always showed up,” Day remarked.

Mel Schilling is survived by her husband, Gareth, and their daughter, Maddie. Her legacy remains one of courage, grace, and an unwavering belief in the power of love.
