Fourteen years ago, Brazilian farmer Josemar Milli and his wife were driving through a forest near their home when they spotted two baby parrots stranded beside a fallen tree. Moved by the sight, the couple rescued the helpless chicks and cared for them until they grew up. One eventually flew off and never returned. The other, named Blondie, chose to stay — despite having every opportunity to leave. She had never been caged and preferred the comfort of home, often perching happily on Milli’s shoulder.
Recently, Blondie’s behavior changed. Though she still came home each night, she began sleeping away for a few days and spent her time hovering near a wooden fence. Curious, Milli investigated — and discovered something incredible. Blondie had found and seemingly adopted three abandoned kittens nestled in a hollow post. Milli suspects a neighbor’s cat gave birth there and then abandoned them. Thanks to Blondie’s unusual attachment to the spot, the kittens were discovered just in time.
Though attempts to reunite the kittens with their feline parent failed, Blondie had already taken on the role of caregiver. “He thinks they’re his,” said Milli. The kittens have since been adopted by Milli’s family, and even the house cat has helped care for them. Thanks to the compassion of a once-orphaned parrot, three kittens found not just safety, but a new family.
Blondie still remains free to come and go, but continues to choose love and loyalty over the wild. Raised with kindness, it’s no surprise she’s learned to share it so freely.
