Zita and Gita were born as conjoined twins—joined at the pelvis. They shared a common intestine, reproductive organs, and three legs.
Each had her own head, heart, and arms. From an early age, they learned to live completely fused—both literally and figuratively.
When they were little, the girls accepted their uniqueness with childlike acceptance: they drew people with three legs, tied two dolls together, and pulled off one of the extra doll’s legs so the dolls would be “like them.”
But as they grew older, Zita and Gita realized more than anything else that they wanted to be separate individuals. The dream of independence became their shared goal.
When they turned 11, doctors decided to perform the most complex surgery of their careers—a separation. There had been similar cases worldwide, but almost always either the surgery failed or only one twin survived.
The surgeons needed 12 hours to separate the girls and remove the third leg. It was an incredibly delicate and risky procedure, but the surgery was successful.
After the separation, the girls relearned how to walk—now with the help of prosthetics. They finished school, began studying foreign languages, and took up drawing and crafts.
However, they still required ongoing medical supervision— their complex anatomy made this necessary.
Unfortunately, their happiness was short-lived: sometime after the surgery, Zita died of sepsis—a severe infectious complication.
Left alone, Gita continued to live—as if for both of them. She faced yet another hardship: several years ago, she was diagnosed with cancer.
Behind her are surgeries on her intestines and rounds of treatment. She is now 33 years old. Despite all the trials, she fights on. She does not give up. She keeps living, with hope and the memory of her sister, who will forever remain part of her story.
