Many people, who went in expecting a slow-paced indie film based on its festival success and awards, were completely caught off guard by just how explicit it really was.
A third viewer didn’t hold back, warning: “This is way too much for Netflix,” while another added: “Wtf is this doing on Netflix. I can’t imagine what it would do to the sensibilities of unsuspecting families opening it for a mindless Sunday viewing.”
It originally received an NC-17 rating in the United States and was given an 18+ rating in Mexico—a decision the filmmakers famously pushed back on in court. So, this isn’t the first time the movie has sparked debate.
“I’ve seen it many times, and notice something new with each viewing.”
Despite the split reactions, Y Tu Mamá También still earns praise from critics for its depth, layered narrative, and subtle political undertones.
