Justice takes action to guarantee home care to young woman who smelled pepper

The case of 25-year-old Thais Medeiros de Oliveira shocked the country. The young woman was admitted to the ICU on February 18, 2023, at the Santa Casa de Anápolis Hospital in Goiás, after feeling ill after smelling a pepper . Since her hospitalization, people have been worried and rooting for her recovery. Now, the Federal Court has set aside R$156,074.88 of public money to ensure that the young woman receives home care.

According to Adriana Medeiros, Thaís’ mother, this court decision was a “great victory” for the young woman’s treatment. According to the Goiás State Health Department (SES-GO), the department is aware of the decision regarding the young woman who sniffed pepper and is taking appropriate measures.

Young man who smelled pepper gets home care

This blocking of public funds from the Goiânia City Hall aims to ensure that Thaís receives home care treatment for six months. Judge Jesus Crisóstomo de Almeida signed the sentence due to the failure to comply with court orders to provide the correct treatment even after the city partially acknowledged the debt and resumed some payments.

To understand the case better: in October 2024, the Court ordered the City of Goiânia to prove that it had provided home care to Thaís Medeiros. At that time, the judge gave the city government five days to provide proof of treatment. If this was not done, the city government and the health secretary would be fined R$5,000 per day.

The court ruling came after the family (of the young woman who sniffed the pepper) claimed that home treatment, which had been guaranteed by an injunction issued in 2023, was not complied with. According to this injunction, Thais must receive home care from a multidisciplinary team, in addition to having transportation to appointments and necessary medical supplies.

Case

The case began in February 2023 at a lunch at her boyfriend’s house in Anápolis (GO). At the time, Thaís became ill after smelling a jar of pickled peppers. After that, the young woman went to the hospital after a cardiorespiratory arrest.

Thaís spent 20 days in an intensive care unit (ICU). The young woman was diagnosed with cerebral edema with irreversible lesions.
