A man has spoken about his brave and selfless attempt to rescue a woman during a shark attack that ended in tragedy. His actions, later shared publicly, have drawn attention to the terrifying moments that unfolded in the water.Arlene Lillis, who was from Minnesota, had been swimming off the coast of St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands when the shark attack occurred. What began as a normal swim quickly turned into a life-threatening emergency.Unaware of the frantic shouts coming from the beach, registered nurse Christopher Carroll, who is from Spanish Fork, Utah, ran into the water in an effort to help her and bring her back to safety.

When Christopher reached her, he made the horrifying realization that Arlene, who was 56 years old, had already been attacked by a shark. The severity of the situation became clear as he got closer.Despite the shock, he managed to bring Arlene, who was still conscious at the time, back toward the shore. As they moved through the water, he tried to comfort her and let her know she was not alone and that medical help was coming.

Tragically, even with his heroic efforts and the urgent response that followed, Arlene later died in the hospital due to the injuries she suffered.

Christopher described the moment he realized a shark attack had taken place as he approached Arlene in the water, which he said was filled with blood and chaos.Speaking to TODAY, he said: “There were people shouting, ‘Don’t go, there’s a shark’, but I didn’t hear any of it. I didn’t hear it at all.”“My second clue should have been that nobody was in the water.”

Once he was able to properly assess her condition, Christopher understood just how serious her injuries were.

“Her arm had been amputated below the elbow,” he said. “At that point I knew it was a big, big shark.”

He later spoke about the moments spent trying to reassure Arlene after reaching dry land, explaining how he focused on keeping her calm and hopeful, saying: “She said she didn’t think she was going to make it, and I told her she was going to be okay, and I just kept trying to reassure her that she wasn’t alone, we’re gonna get her help and get her to the hospital.”Family friend Andrew Gamble also shared words in her memory, paying tribute to the kind of person Arlene was, saying: “She loved the water, she loved people. She was a wonderful human being.”

While incidents like this are devastating, shark attacks are considered relatively rare overall. Most people will never encounter a shark in a dangerous situation. Many attacks, though not all, are believed to happen when a shark mistakes a human for a food source. In some cases, the shark leaves once it realizes the person is not prey.Even so, the power of a single bite can be overwhelming. An exploratory bite alone can cause severe, life-altering, and sometimes fatal injuries.

There are hundreds of shark species around the world, but only a small number are known to pose a serious risk to humans. The species most often linked to attacks include Great White sharks, Tiger sharks, and Bull sharks. These sharks tend to live in shallow coastal waters where people swim more frequently. This overlap increases the chance of encounters, unlike deep-ocean species such as Oceanic White Tip sharks and Blue sharks. Even so, those species have also been involved in fatal attacks in rare cases.
